It helps if you are able to share parts of your life with your current date because it shows trust. However, don’t reveal everything all at once. Dating is about give and take, so when you disclose some aspects of your life be prepared to listen when your date wants to share parts of his/her life with you as well. You may have heard that you have to “be yourself” during a date and to a certain extent that is true. But it also makes sense to put your best foot forward so that your date is lured in by your most charming qualities -- always leave them wanting more (and by that measure, make sure there’s always more to reveal -- don’t throw all of your best cards away on the first hand).

Some people may also think that dating is a game that they have to play before you can get to know the other person better. Actually, the opposite is true – dating is not about baiting your date or making them play mind games. If you engage in game-playing, two things may occur: your date will be scared by what you are doing or they may get offended. It is always better to think of your date as someone whose company you might enjoy so that the meetup will be more fun. This will allow both of you to relax during the date and may ease the way to a more exclusive situation.

You also have to pay attention so that you can see the effect of conversation on your date. Sometimes it is best to quit talking and just listen – speak when the moment presents itself and when you really have a chance for a meaningful connection to the conversation and your date. If your date asks you for your opinion, even better – it means he or she is really interested in what you have to say. This is a plus in your favor so that you don’t have to work so hard to make the date go perfectly.

You also don’t have to push to become an interesting person – this is something that many people fail at because they think that they have to really impress their date. But think about it: do you really want to work that hard to make the relationship work? The answer is: probably not. Also, what is interesting to one person could be very boring to another, so it’s best to just be yourself and take it from there.

Dating is a necessity on the road to love, but when we stop trying so hard we may be able to actually enjoy the dating process more. So: self-disclosure, having a relaxing conversation, and being able to listen to what your date wants to say are all good ways to succeed in the dating scene without having to put out that much effort. Who knows?  Your relaxed and genuine approach might actually be able to turn that first date into true love.
